The Marriage Of Poetry & Poverty

Anyone can write poetry
because all you need
is a writing surface & a pen.

Say, a cheap pad, napkin,
even toilet paper or your arm.

No instrument, art materials,
camera or video equipment.

You don't even have to know how to spell
or how to construct a sentence.

There's no need for plot, just music
and the poorer class have music, they have
always had it. Plucked from the empty air.

No instrument, no art materials.
You know who you are and they'll know
who you are, as soon as you open your mouth.

Anyone can write poetry,
because all you need
is a life & a heart - just don't pretend
to be from a culture you're not.

In some ways,
poetry is the pauper's art
and I must write it and write it.
